Spanish stage director Marta Eguilior will premiere a major new operatic work in 2026 with the world debut of Zombie Opera, an original creation by Italian composer and conductor Andrea Battistoni. The production will be presented at the Opéra Royal de Wallonie-Liège as part of its 2026–2027 season, marking a significant milestone in Eguilior’s growing international career.
The new opera is featured within a season structured around the themes of power and desire, as announced by the Liège opera house, and stands out as one of its central events due to its status as a world premiere and its commitment to contemporary creation.
With Zombie Opera, Eguilior continues to develop a distinctive visual and conceptual language, known for its strong symbolic charge and striking сценographic identity. This new production proposes an immersive and unsettling universe, where the grotesque and the human intersect, offering a radically contemporary stage experience.
The project emerges from a collaboration with Andrea Battistoni, a prominent figure in the European operatic scene, widely recognized for his work as a conductor and increasingly active as a composer. The opera has been conceived specifically for the Liège stage, reinforcing the institution’s commitment to expanding the operatic repertoire through new works.
This premiere further consolidates Eguilior’s international presence following recent projects outside Spain, positioning her as one of the emerging voices reshaping contemporary opera staging.
Zombie Opera is already shaping up to be one of the highlights of the European operatic season, bringing together an international artistic team around a work that seeks to challenge the boundaries of the genre and redefine the relationship between music, stage, and audience.
